BORNEO RAINFOREST CAMPAIGN
The world's third largest island, Borneo, houses an estimated 6 percent of the world's plant and animal species, and its forests are the last major refuge for the orangutan and many other species. The region is one of the most beautiful, rich and unique forest systems in the world, and is a crucial part of the earth’s ecosystem.
Borneo’s rainforests are currently being destroyed at an unprecedented rate. Multinational companies are logging, bulldozing and burning pristine old-growth forests at a rate of 300 football fields per hour! Once cleared, they plant palm oil trees to satisfy the huge demand for cheap vegetable oils from Western food producers and biofuel companies.
This is having a devastating effect on local communities and plant and animal species, and, due to the scale of the destruction, is significantly contributing to global warming. At the current rate of deforestation by the palm oil industry, orangutans in the wild will be close to extinction by 2012, and 98% of all forests in Indonesia and Malaysia will be gone by 2022.
Donate now to support our campaign to stop deforestation in Borneo.
We need your help to support our campaign activities:
- Setting up village networks to stop illegal logging
- Working with other bodies to create an international certification scheme for sustainable palm oil
- Working with large corporations and consumers to encourage the use of alternative vegetable oils and biofuels
The situation is urgent. Please help us save one of the richest and most diverse regions on the planet.
